What You Need To Set Up A Real Estate Website

Table of Contents

Creating a professional real estate website involves several critical components to ensure it operates smoothly and securely. Here’s what you need to get started:

  • Domain
  • Security and SSL Certificates
  • Hosting and Server
  • Email

I’m in the business of providing great real estate web design to realtors. One of the realities I have been able to uncover is that many realtors started their real estate careers because they want to help people either sell or buy or invest in property, but definitely not set up websites.

Figuring out how to set up websites is extremely time-consuming, especially if you don’t have a technical background. What usually ends up happening is that most agents, unbeknownst to them, end up signing up or purchasing some random service company and waste a ton of money in setting up their website and the whole process.

So how do you set up a website so that you know exactly what you should be purchasing when you find yourself in the predicament of needing to set up a website?

I want to focus on two points.

  1. Having a website isn’t all about creating a beautiful-looking real estate website for yourself.
  2. You don’t have to set your website up all by yourself.

We are going to be going over some boring yet very important stuff when it comes to setting up a website specifically domains, servers, hosting, security, and emails. At its core, this is what a useful website is composed of.

The best way to really explain this is to use some analogy and metaphors to really help you unpack what exactly we’re building. To really simplify this, let’s go with something that we all already know, which is the analogy of building a house because hey, we’re all in real estate after all and this is something we can all kind of relate to.

Domain

In order to have a website, you need a domain. A domain is like a house address. It’s a location on the internet that you can use to send people to visit, the same way that you would provide your address to a property so that people to find the location.

Security and SSL Certificates

Let’s fast forward to the future and let’s say that you’ve built this really awesome property. However,  this property isn’t in the nicest neighborhood so you’re going to need to put up some security to repel the bad guys. In the web world, this security I’m referring to is called an SSL certificate. This is something that is installed into your website to try to keep the bad guys from breaking in.

Hosting and Server

Now that we have an address, we need a building or structure associated with it. Let’s imagine that you drive to this imaginary address for a property. When you get there you’ll find an empty lot. A server and hosting is an empty lot. You can use this empty lot to build property the same way that you can use a server and hosting to start building a website.

Email

If you wanted to start receiving mail to this property, you essentially need a mailbox. Email is like your traditional mailbox. When people need to send you something, you need to have that set up so people can start mailing you messages.

Final Thoughts

That’s pretty much all you need in a website. If you sign up with a service provider, like GoDaddy, you’ll see that they actually sell you on and set up the same four items that I referred to above. You’ll also find that these types of things that you need are not that expensive.

So for example, a domain will usually set you back about $12  a year, server and hosting give or take about $5 to $6 bucks a month, an SSL certificate about $60 a year, and email somewhere around $10 a month. Keep in mind though that prices fluctuate, however, these are the averages in the market. For a real estate website to serve its purpose, all you need to spend is approximately $250 annually. If anyone tries to sell you anything more than that then it definitely isn’t worth it.
