In my real estate marketing business, I work with real estate professionals on different strategies like great real estate web design, that can help them grow their business. I received an email from an agent a few weeks ago about how he’s tried a million different strategies for his Sphere of Influence, Social Media, Email Campaigns, Youtube Videos, and other advertisement mediums and none of them are working.
I wanted to address this because there are some really valuable takeaways that can be gained from this because maybe you’re feeling the same way.
The term “I’ve been burned in the past” is no more than an excuse. It’s an excuse because it checks all of the boxes of it being an excuse.
Box #1 is that this is very much a victim mindset which refers to a state of mind in which a person feels helpless and as though the world is against them.
Box #2 is he said, “I’ve tried a million things and none of them work”. You probably didn’t try a million things, you probably haven’t even tried 100 things. People that tried 100 things usually find at least one that works. There is actually a term for this, A/B testing, and it’s part of what you need to do if you want to get really good at marketing.
And lastly, box #3 is he took a shortcut. He more than likely hit a roadblock and tried hiring someone for a few hundred bucks to try to solve this problem for him and it didn’t pan out.

This leads me to a fallacy that I think many agents out there are holding as truth. “If you don’t know something, then hire someone that does.” There is validity to this but it is being interpreted the wrong way hence the result of “being burned”.
In really dissecting this, you have to look at it from 2 different spectrums based on one common denominator which is budget. More specifically, can you hire the expert at the expert rate? If the answer is yes, and you’re getting the results you want, then everything is great. However, if the answer is no, then it’s a clear indication that you are not paying enough for the expert to do this work for you. Instead, you’ve probably tried hiring someone at a cheaper rate and it didn’t get you anywhere.
There is a basic rule that many successful entrepreneurs follow and that rule is to invest in yourself. I know this sounds cliche and you’ve probably heard it a bunch of times but let me use it in this context. If you have a $10k budget for marketing, you are better off investing that into your own education, than blindly hiring someone that’s going to promise you “high-quality leads” or whatever derivative of that you’re searching for.

This is really just based on the numbers, the average cost for a new client is roughly between $1500 to $2500 based on market data. It would benefit you to invest your marketing budget into yourself so that you can get the best bang for your buck and optimal return of investment based on what you’re spending. Additionally, it’s more empowering that you understand how this stuff works.
You’ve been burned in the past because you’ve been misled. You chose to be ignorant of the process and it cost you dollars. This leads me to my final point for today which is your first hire. This is a pretty hard-fast rule in all successful entrepreneurial mastermind groups.
The first hire you make should be an assistant to delegate some of the redundant tasks you have on your plate. It should not be an agency that’s promising you leads or a virtual assistant that will manage your social media. Instead, find someone that will figure out how this stuff works. It is better that you invest in someone that will help you with a system. Once you’ve become very comfortable with the system, delegate it out. Don’t hire out of sequence because you end up wasting a ton of money.
